DMEPOS Accreditation

The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 had some additions as it relates to DMEPOS accreditation, which stated that quality standards for suppliers of DMEPOS products be established and implemented. All suppliers of DMEPOS products or services must comply with the quality standards to receive Medicare Part B payments and retain their billing number.

The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) expanded on this notion by requiring all DMEPOS suppliers, other than those professionals directly stated in MIPPA as being exempt from DMEPOS accreditation, to meet the Medicare established quality standards by September 30, 2009.

DMEPOS accreditation covers items such as:

  • DME (Durable Medical Equipment)
  • Medical Supplies
  • Home Dialysis Supplies and Equipment
  • Therapeutic Shoes
  • Parenteral and Enteral Nutrient, Equipment and Supplies
  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Prosthetic Devices, Prosthetics and Orthotics

The DMEPOS accreditation process can be time consuming and once the DMEPOS accreditation process has been completed by existing DMEPOS suppliers already enrolled in Medicare, those suppliers are required to obtain and submit proof of their DMEPOS accreditation to the National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC). All new suppliers must be accredited prior to enrolling in the Medicare program.
